About Damien De Lepeleire's Work

Damien De Lepeleire (1965) was born in Brussels, where he still lives. At the age of twenty-one, he was awarded the "Prix de la Jeune Peinture Belg" for three large paintings depicting greyhounds. Since then he has been working on a coherent, consistent body of work that often takes the form of consecutive ‘series’ devoted to various subjects and techniques.

De Lepeleire continually questions his work, attempting to push back the borders of the acceptable. He is never satisfied with the status quo, driving himself and his work ever onwards. The disadvantage of this way of working is that observers who have only seen one or two exhibitions are unable to discover the cohesion between the various series. Those with an idea of the entire body of work are often amazed at the coherent theme and the way it has taken on ever new forms.

In general, De Lepeleire’s work is a reflection on the theme of the original and the reproduction, stemming from the idea that an old-fashioned, clumsy or otherwise poor reproduction can be more valuable than one that is contemporary, fashionable or supposedly technically perfect. For this reason, he collects old catalogues and books on the works of such artists as Cézanne, Picasso and Matisse, which were often produced in cooperation with the artists and therefore offer far more interesting information than contemporary catalogues with reproductions that are supposedly perfect today, but tomorrow will already be antiquated. The theme of reproduction is not approached as in the works of Magritte or Broodthaers, but follows more in the footsteps of – to use a Belgian reference – the work of Walter Swennen, which is continually questing for unexpected solutions for having an image tilt into a painting. The limits of the beautiful are therefore constantly shifting, in search of generous, new paintings with new textures and a new poetry.
